DRAGON BAND SUCCESS

The Round Rock Dragon Band competed in prelims on Friday, November 4th in the Bands of America San Antonio Super Regional held in the Alamodome.  Their score advanced them to the finals level of competition held on Saturday, November 5th.  Of the 82! bands in the competition, 14 were selected as finalists and our Dragon Band advanced to finish in 8th place in finals, an outstanding accomplishment amongst such a fine group of competitors.
Then on Monday, November 7th, the Dragon Band performed in the prelims of the UIL 6A State Marching Band Contest, again held in the San Antonio Alamodome.  Eligibility for this contest was determined by our students earning first division ratings at the region level, then moving to the area level, and finally advancing to state.  In total, 42 6A bands moved all the way through that process to advance to the state level.  Of those 42 excellent bands, ours again moved on to the finals level!  Our band competed for the last time this season in the 14 band finals and earned a terrific 10th place finish!  That’s 10th out of 249 6A schools in Texas who began the process at the region level.
Additionally, this year our Junior Varsity marching band competed for the first time ever!  Round Rock may be the only school in our state to not only field two distinct marching bands, but also send them to competitions.  It’s pretty remarkable.  The JV students performed at the Vista Ridge Marching Festival on October 1st.  They came in last overall but did place higher in the music caption than one other group at the contest.  Along with our Varsity group, the JV competed at the UIL Region Marching Contest where they earned one first division!, and two second division ratings from the three judges.  This group will continue to build up their skill in competitions next year.
Bands in Texas are better than in any other state, it’s a fact.  The quality at the very top level is higher and the depth of quality from top to bottom is stronger in Texas, so earning any place in finals at BOA events and UIL events is no small feat.  Our Dragons have made themselves, our community and their families very proud.

For those wondering – Bands of America (commonly BOA) is separate from the University Interscholastic League (UIL).  Bands can choose to participate in BOA events by paying an entry fee.  Bands pay an entry fee for UIL events as well, but participation is usually compulsory with most schools and school districts.  While every band in Texas competes at UIL, many also compete at BOA for an additional experience for the students.  We are one such group, having typically performed very well at BOA events.  The judging and scoring systems between BOA and UIL are similar but not the same, with BOA generally being the more consistent of the two.
